EARLY ENGLISH POEM
A burning bird
Of gold and jade
Flew over the houses
Its eyes were blue
Its song was black
It landed and burned
Well into the morning
When the call
Of a calico cat came
Out into the courtyard
And down it flew
To look into the eyes
Of the cat
In the shaft
