STANDING AT THE DESK

I'm standing up at my desk
Because when I sit down at my desk
I switch into "work" mode
Which is more of a personality problem
Than a state fit to facilitate
Profoundly effective and efficient behavior.
Perhaps that's melodramatic --
I live in terror of noticing
I've been slouching for an hour
Is more like it. What can I possibly
Have gotten done if I've been slouching
For an hour. Slouch, and you have to spend
An hour in the gym with the headphones on
Blasting fast music to make you smarter,
More science as delivered by television news.
I sit bolt upright on the edge of the chair
When I do sit at my desk, and when I am
Seated like so I am terrifically productive,
Memo after memo emerges from my fingertips
Like new cadenzas. Right now I'm standing.
Well, I'm not actually. In fact I am slumped.
